Earth Resistance Testing in Bangladesh

An earth resistance test measures how easily current flows from an earth electrode into the surrounding soil. It shows whether each earth pit, and the earthing system as a whole, can carry fault and lightning current safely. Tests follow the methods in IEEE 81 and should be repeated regularly, because soil and connections change over time.

Scope

What’s included.

Everything below is done by our own engineers and installation team, so one company answers for the result.

  • Fall-of-potential test on individual electrodes
  • Clamp-on testing where pits cannot be disconnected
  • Overall resistance of the whole earthing system
  • Continuity of earth conductors from panels to pits
  • Readings at lightning down conductor test joints
  • Condition check of pits, clamps and conductors
  • Soil resistivity survey on request
  • Site plan marking each pit and its reading

Which test method is right for my site?

The fall-of-potential method in IEEE 81 is the reference test. The electrode is disconnected, a current stake and a potential stake are driven in a straight line away from it, and the tester measures resistance as the potential stake is moved. It is accurate, but it needs open ground and enough distance to place the stakes well clear of the electrode.

On a crowded factory site with concrete everywhere, that space often does not exist. A clamp-on tester measures without stakes or disconnection, but only gives a valid result where the electrode is part of a multi-earthed system with a parallel return path. We choose the method pit by pit, state it in the report, and do not use clamp-on readings where they would mislead.

Why do earth readings change over time?

Soil resistance rises as the ground dries, so readings in the dry winter months run higher than in the monsoon. Copper corrodes at clamps, bolts loosen, and building work can cut a conductor without anyone noticing. A pit that tested well at handover can fail a few years later, which is why a single result is worth less than a regular record.

We recommend testing at the same time each year, ideally in the dry season, so the readings show the worst case and can be compared fairly. Every report records the date, weather and soil conditions, the method and a marked site plan, so next year's test checks exactly the same pits in the same way.

How it’s done

How we deliver it, step by step.

  1. 01

    Locate every pit

Earth pits, test joints and conductors found and marked on the site layout.

  2. 02

    Inspect connections

Clamps, bolts and conductors checked for corrosion, looseness or damage before measuring.

  3. 03

    Measure resistance

Fall-of-potential or clamp-on readings taken at each pit, with ground conditions recorded.

  4. 04

    Check continuity

Earth path from panels, equipment and down conductors to the pits confirmed.

  5. 05

    Report findings

Readings, method, marked plan and recommended repairs issued in a signed report.

Price guide

What sets the price.

Every site is different, so we price from a survey, not a rate card. These are the factors that move the number, and the written quote shows each one.

Get an exact quote
  • Number of earth pits and test points on site
  • Pits that are buried, unmarked or under floors
  • Space available for fall-of-potential stakes
  • Added soil resistivity or continuity surveys
  • Repairs such as new clamps or extra electrodes

Frequently asked questions

First we find out whether the problem is the connection or the electrode. A corroded clamp or loose bolt is a quick repair, and the pit is retested on the spot. If the electrode itself reads high, the options are parallel rods, a deeper electrode or soil treatment. We recommend the cheapest fix that reaches the agreed target.

Mainly the number of pits and test points, and how easy they are to reach. Sites with buried or unmarked pits take longer, because each one must be found first. Adding soil resistivity or continuity surveys widens the scope. We quote per site after reviewing your layout or making a short visit.

Yearly is the common baseline for factories and commercial buildings, preferably in the dry season when readings are highest. Test again after construction near the pits, after a lightning strike, or when equipment gives unexplained shocks or nuisance trips. Lightning protection earths follow the inspection intervals in IEC 62305-3.

Usually, yes. Clamp-on tests and continuity checks are done with the installation live. For a fall-of-potential test the electrode is briefly disconnected, which we do one pit at a time so the rest of the earthing stays connected and the installation remains protected throughout.
