Lightning and Surge Protection Systems in Bangladesh
A lightning protection system intercepts a strike on the roof, carries the current down the outside of the building and spreads it into the ground, so it does not pass through the structure, the wiring or people. Surge protective devices then stop the remaining overvoltage from damaging electrical and electronic equipment. IEC 62305 covers both.

Does my building need lightning protection?
IEC 62305-2 answers this with a risk assessment rather than a rule of thumb. It weighs the building's size and height, how isolated it is, local lightning frequency, construction, occupancy and what a strike would cost in lives, services and equipment. Bangladesh sees frequent thunderstorms, especially in the pre-monsoon months, so many buildings come out needing protection.
The assessment also sets the lightning protection level, from I to IV, which decides how closely air terminals and conductors are spaced. A garment factory with hundreds of workers and a roof covered in solar panels may need a higher level than a storage shed of the same size.
How is the roof protected?
IEC 62305-3 gives three methods for placing air terminals: the rolling sphere, the protection angle and the mesh. Large flat factory roofs usually suit a conductor mesh with short air rods at corners and edges, while rooftop plant, water tanks and solar arrays are checked with the rolling sphere so nothing sits outside the protected zone.
We design to these methods. Early streamer emission terminals, sold as covering a wide radius from a single rod, are not part of IEC 62305 or NFPA 780, so we do not size systems on those claims. Down conductors are spaced around the perimeter, each with a test joint so its earth can be measured on its own.
Why are surge protective devices part of the job?
A strike on or near the building induces surges in power, data and CCTV cables, often damaging inverters, PLCs, fire alarm panels and cameras even when the structure is unharmed. IEC 62305-4 deals with these effects. We fit Type 1 SPDs where the supply enters, Type 2 at distribution boards and finer protection at sensitive equipment, coordinated so each stage does its share.
How it’s done
How we deliver it, step by step.
- 01
Risk assessment
IEC 62305-2 calculation using your building's size, use, occupancy, contents and location.
- 02
Design layout
Protection level chosen, air terminals and down conductors placed, separation distances checked.
- 03
Roof installation
Conductors fixed on proper supports, roof steel and plant bonded, joints made and sealed.
- 04
Earth and SPDs
Electrodes installed and bonded to the main earth; SPDs fitted at each distribution level.
- 05
Test and document
Continuity and earth resistance measured at every test joint and marked on the drawings.
Price guide
What sets the price.
Every site is different, so we price from a survey, not a rate card. These are the factors that move the number, and the written quote shows each one.
- Roof area, building height and amount of rooftop plant
- Protection level required by the risk assessment
- Number of down conductors and earth electrodes
- Conductor material, copper or aluminum, and fixing type
- Number of distribution boards needing surge protection
- Access equipment needed to work safely at height

Frequently asked questions
BNBC 2020 includes lightning protection requirements, and whether a building needs a system depends on its height, use and risk. For factories, RSC and buyer audits commonly check for a working system with test records. The reliable way to decide is an IEC 62305-2 risk assessment, which we include in the design.
Cost is driven by roof area and height, the protection level the risk assessment requires, the number of down conductors and earth pits, and how many panels need surge protection. Rooftop solar and tanks add bonding work. We price after a survey and send the design with the quote, so you can see exactly what is included.
Early streamer emission terminals are sold as protecting a wide radius from one rod, but that claim is not recognized by IEC 62305 or NFPA 780, and independent research has not confirmed it. We design with conventional air terminals and mesh to IEC 62305. If you already have an ESE system, we can assess what it leaves unprotected.
IEC 62305-3 links inspection intervals to the protection level, with visual checks more often than full tests. In practice, check conductors, fixings and test joints every year before the pre-monsoon storm season, and test continuity and earth resistance at the intervals your design sets. Inspect again after any strike or roof work.
