Electrical & Lightning Safety
Earthing System Design and Installation in Bangladesh
An earthing system connects the electrical installation and exposed metalwork to the ground, so fault current flows safely, breakers trip quickly and no one touches a live surface. A good system is designed from soil resistivity tests, uses durable electrodes and bonding, and is proven by measured earth resistance at handover.

- Soil resistivity test by the Wenner four-pin method
- Electrode or grid design for the agreed target
- Copper or copper-bonded rods and earth conductors
- Inspection pits with covers and test links

Why does soil testing come first?
Earth resistance depends mostly on the soil, and soil varies a lot between sites. Filled land, river silt and the hillier ground around Chattogram behave very differently. Driving rods to a standard depth without testing either wastes copper or leaves the system well above its target value.
We measure soil resistivity at several probe spacings using the Wenner four-pin method described in IEEE 81. The results show how resistivity changes with depth, which tells us whether deeper rods, more rods in parallel, a buried grid or a ground-enhancing backfill will reach the target at the lowest cost.
What does a sub-station earth need that a building earth does not?
A sub-station must handle high fault currents, and during a fault the ground around it rises in voltage. IEEE 80 sets out how to design the earth grid so that step voltage, between a person's feet, and touch voltage, between hand and feet, stay within safe limits. That usually means a buried mesh, not a few rods.
The transformer neutral, HT switchgear frames, fences and panel bodies are all bonded to that grid. For the rest of the building, IEC 60364-5-54 covers earthing arrangements and protective conductor sizes. We design both and connect them, so you have one earthing system with known values instead of several isolated pits.
Should data and lightning earths be kept separate?
Isolated earths for computers and separate lightning earths are still common, but they cause problems. During a strike or a fault, separate earths can sit at very different voltages, and that difference appears across any equipment connected to both. IEC 62305 and IEC 60364 favor bonding all earths together. We keep separate pits where testing needs them, but bond them.
How it’s done

- 04
Bond and connect
Main earth bar, panels, neutral, generator and lightning earths bonded into one system.
- 05
Measure and certify
Earth resistance measured by IEEE 81 methods, with values and test points recorded.
Price guide
What sets the price.
Every site is different, so we price from a survey, not a rate card. These are the factors that move the number, and the written quote shows each one.
- Soil resistivity and the target resistance required
- Number and depth of electrodes, or a buried grid
- Copper versus copper-bonded steel materials
- Floor breaking, excavation and site access
- Bonding work needed on existing panels and structures

Frequently asked questions
There is no single number for every site. The target depends on the earthing arrangement, the protective devices and, for sub-stations, the fault current and the step and touch voltage limits under IEEE 80. Many specifications and utilities set their own values. We agree the target in writing at design stage and prove it by measurement at handover.
The main drivers are soil resistivity, the resistance target, how many electrodes are needed and how deep, and whether copper or copper-bonded steel is used. Breaking floors in an existing factory adds labor. A soil test early on usually saves money, because it prevents over- and under-design. We quote after the survey and test.
Chemical earthing surrounds the electrode with a ground-enhancing compound that lowers the resistance between electrode and soil and holds moisture. It helps in dry or high-resistivity soil, but it is not automatically better. In damp, low-resistivity soil, conventional rods may reach the target for less. The soil test decides which is worth paying for.
Measure earth resistance at least once a year, ideally in the dry season when readings are highest, and after any digging or construction near the electrodes. Check pits, clamps and conductors for corrosion at every maintenance visit. Keep the readings year to year, because auditors often want to see the trend, not just the latest figure.
