Insulation Resistance (IR) Testing in Bangladesh

An insulation resistance test applies a DC voltage between conductors, and between conductors and earth, to measure how well the insulation stops current leaking. Low readings warn of damp, damaged or aged insulation before it causes a shock, a short circuit or a fire. It is part of initial verification and useful at every maintenance interval.

Scope

What’s included.

Everything below is done by our own engineers and installation team, so one company answers for the result.

  • Phase-to-phase and phase-to-earth tests on main cables
  • Feeder and sub-circuit tests at each distribution board
  • Motor and generator winding tests
  • Transformer winding insulation tests
  • Polarization index on large motors and transformers
  • Temperature and humidity recorded with every reading
  • Comparison with previous results, where available

What does an IR reading actually tell you?

Insulation is never perfect; a tiny current always leaks through it. The tester measures that leakage at a set DC voltage and reports it as resistance, usually in megohms. A high, stable reading means the insulation is dry and sound. A low reading, or one that has fallen sharply since last year, points to moisture, contamination, heat damage or a crushed cable.

A single number says less than people think, because readings change with temperature, humidity and cable length. So we record the conditions, apply temperature correction where the method calls for it, and compare against earlier results. A steady downward trend is often the most useful warning in the whole report.

When is a polarization index test worth doing?

For motors, generators and transformers, a one-minute reading can mislead. The polarization index compares the reading at ten minutes with the reading at one minute. Clean, dry insulation keeps absorbing charge, so its reading rises over time; wet or contaminated insulation stays flat. IEEE 43 describes the test for rotating machines.

It takes longer, so we use it where the equipment justifies the time: large motors driving production lines, fire pump motors, standby generators and distribution transformers. For ordinary building cables, spot readings at the right test voltage, compared year on year, are usually enough.

Why test after flooding or a long shutdown?

Monsoon flooding, roof leaks and a factory standing idle through the Eid holidays all let moisture into cables, motor windings and panels. Switching back on without testing risks a flashover at the worst moment. An IR test before re-energizing shows which circuits are safe, which need drying out and which need replacing.

How it’s done

How we deliver it, step by step.

  1. 01

    Plan the isolation

Circuits to test marked on the SLD, and the isolation sequence agreed with your electricians.

  2. 02

    Isolate and protect

Circuits switched off and locked out; drives, SPDs and electronics disconnected to prevent damage.

  3. 03

    Measure

Readings taken at the right test voltage for each circuit, with temperature and humidity noted.

  4. 04

    Discharge and restore

Each circuit discharged after testing, connections restored and checked before re-energizing.

  5. 05

    Report and trend

Results graded and compared with past tests; failing circuits listed with the recommended repair.

Price guide

What sets the price.

Every site is different, so we price from a survey, not a rate card. These are the factors that move the number, and the written quote shows each one.

Get an exact quote
  • Number of circuits, cables, motors and transformers to test
  • Polarization index tests on large equipment
  • Shutdown windows, including night or holiday testing
  • Whether an accurate SLD exists to plan the work
  • Report depth, including trend analysis against earlier results

Frequently asked questions

It depends on the equipment, its voltage and the standard being applied. IEC 60364-6 gives minimum values for new low-voltage installations at set test voltages, and IEEE 43 gives guidance for motors and generators. For maintenance, the trend matters as much as the number. Our reports state the acceptance value used for each item.

Yes, for the circuits being tested. The test applies a DC voltage to de-energized conductors, so each circuit must be isolated and locked out. We plan the sequence with your team so only a few circuits are off at a time, or test the whole site during a weekend or holiday shutdown.

At initial verification of any new installation, then at intervals set by condition and criticality, as NFPA 70B recommends. Many factories test main cables and large motors yearly, and again after flooding, a long shutdown or any fault that tripped a breaker. Fire pump motors and other critical equipment deserve closer attention.

It can damage electronics left connected, such as variable speed drives, PLC cards, surge protective devices and LED drivers. That is why we disconnect or bypass them before testing and choose a test voltage suited to each circuit. Cables and motor windings are built to withstand the test voltages used.
